Types of Sedation
At our Charlotte dental office, Dr. Shapiro offers oral sedation, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation. He’ll discuss your needs, as well as your past and current medical history, to determine the method that’s best for you.
- Oral Sedation – With oral sedation, you’ll take a sedative about an hour before your visit, then have a friendly or family drive you to your appointment. You’ll drift in to a state of complete mental and physical relaxation, and Dr. Shapiro will perform your procedures.
- Oral Conscious Sedation – This sedation method involves two steps. You’ll take a sedative prior to your treatments, as with oral sedation. Then, Dr. Shapiro will administer nitrous oxide during your treatments. This deepens sedation but still lets you respond and express your needs.
- IV Sedation – Dr. Shapiro may suggest IV sedation for lengthy procedures. It’s also a good choice for patients who have trouble fully opening their mouths or who can’t sit in one position for long periods of time. IV sedation is administered by a dental anesthesiologist.
